Carcassonne the Board Game
TACTICS FOR LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS
Move by move, tile by tile, a game of CARCASSONNE sees the development
of a mediaeval landscape. But it takes some clever planning, if you
want to be sure that your followers end up in the most lucrative parts
of the board.
Carcassone is not only the name of a delightful town in Suthern France,
but also a perfect example of a massive and unique fortification,
set within a wide, branching, landscape. This is the background to
CARCASSONNE. Each turn, the players place beautifully illustrated
landscape cards. These gradually build up into a branching network
of towns, roads, meadows and abbies. Additionally, each player has
control of 7 followers, who they can introduce into this landscape,
to serve as knight or highway trader, monk or farmer, so as to gain
points for their master. And of course, their position affects the
points they gain. A knight for example, will win far more points if
they are stationed in a large town, than in a village. But then it
will take some time before you can build a large town, and until it's
built, the knight won't win any points at all, so it might be cleverer
to place him in a village to start with, even if he doesn't get much
for being there, and then move him to a more lucrative position later
on. The only problem really, is that you've never got enough followers,
and there's no way that you can get involved everywhere that you would
like to. (Incidentally, CARCASSONNE makes an excellent game for 2
players).
